Asulox - Emergency Authorisation for the 2022 season

An Emergency Authorisation has been issued today to allow Asulox to be used for bracken control in Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the 2022 season.

Full details will be available on the website later today: www.brackencontrol.co.uk/asulam. The key points are:

Application is authorised from 1st July.
To minimise interaction with breeding birds, where feasible, application should take place after 1st August, or as late in July as possible.
To protect mammals, application is not allowed where the hazel dormouse is known to breed.
Aerial application has been authorised subject to an aerial spraying permit being obtained: the regulator will provide template application forms.
As for 2021, ground-based application has been authorised for conservation areas only, which have a statutory conservation designation.
There is no change to the buffer zones included in previous authorisations.
The EA period will end on 12th September for placing on the market and for use - no spraying is to take place after this date.
Returns of unopened containers will be accepted by distributors; it will be illegal to hold stocks of Asulox after 28th October.
The EA period will end on 29th October 2022 for storage and disposal of stocks:

Asulox will be available through nominated distributors in 1,000 litre and 20 litre containers.

To meet the requirements of Appendix 3 (Stewardship) of the EA approval, distributors, contractors and users of Asulox are asked to ensure that details of the application of the product are provided to the Bracken Control Group. Details and a form will be available on the Asulam page of the website in the next few days. This information is required to allow data to be provided in support of further applications for the use of Asulox. All details will be aggregated before submission so that individual information is not made public.

This approval is very welcome but it has been granted much later than hoped for. The BCG is asking for the approval process to be revised so that this brinkmanship is avoided. It is an unnecessary drain on resources and patience for all involved from: the regulators, the government agencies, the supplier of Asulox, the distributors, the contractors and most importantly those who use the product to control bracken. We can do better and I hope we will be given the opportunity to demonstrate this next year, so that the threats from bracken can be mitigated in a safe and effective manner.

I hope that this information and that which will be added to the website is clear. Please get in touch if any further clarification would help.

Many users of Asulam have returned the form that was attached to the containers when sold.

Please could anyone who has not yet provided details complete the form as soon as possible.

The form is available for printing and completing by hand from the website; online and Word versions of the form are also available.

Webinar: The Future of Chemical Bracken Control
    https://www.brackencontrol.co.uk/information/meetings

A webinar is being organised to allow key parties and some guests an opportunity to discuss the issues surrounding the future of chemical control of bracken.  The intention is that other delegates will be allowed to listen to the discussion and provide written questions.

The latest version draft Bracken Control Review will provide a baseline for the discussion.  This will avoid the need to present information during the webinar that is already available .

Additional information about the webinar is available from the Information - Meetings page on the website. A link to register for the webinar is provided.

    Bracken Control Group Meeting
The next meeting for BCG Sector Representatives will be held online on 10:00-13:00 on 26th October 2021. The meeting will allow the consideration of the draft application for an Emergency Authorisation for the use of Asulam for bracken control in 2022.

    Asulam Application Records

Thank you to all those who have provided me with details of where Asulam has been applied this season.

As the season draws to a close, please could I ask anyone who has used Asulam this year, but not yet submitted details, to send me the information. It is essential that I have accurate records to support the submission of the application for the use of Asulam for next year.

All the details required are set out on the Asulam page of the website with links to the different versions of the Records Form.
